With violence and twists that fail to make it equal the Korean version, this has to be one of the most impotent Hollywood remakes I've ever seen. Where Park's "Oldboy" was psychologically challenging, Lee's is just laborious. Where the original slashed into you like a jagged saw blade, this one cuts like a dull and rusty butter knife.

People who have seen the original will scoff at this remake - people who have never seen the original Oldboy will probably be turned off by the subject matter - it's no wonder Spike Lee found himself in a no-win situation and the film tanked hard. I, for one, didn't think it deserved that much hate - I though Sharlto Copley made an excellent villain - with an even more heinous and interesting back story than the Korean film. That being said, the violence is too cartoonish, the acting a bit too over-the-top (especially Josh Brolin) and it feels like a pale imitation of the original. But still worth a watch - and the end twist is still a killer.

As a big fan of the original i was looking forward to this. reviews have been really bad some of the worst I've seen .. and while its not anywhere near as real or as good as the original its still interesting , it has a very different take on the story i thought but has less real less guts less power. even the famous crazy fight scene was weak with a odd moving josh punching into thin air most of the time.
you wouldn't know spike lee was involved in this remake as its so unlike his other movies. it lacks his punch.
samuel L jackson is never a good choice for a serious movie. he is the same in every film and just cant be taken seriously especially in the suit he wears in this..
josh is ok but its bad casting he wasn't suitable for this role. nor were the other actors. i get the …
