I wanted to like it, really I did, but "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" drags its feet and makes it hard to care about its boring characters.

There is a strong artistic sensibility to the proceedings. The camera work, editing, cinematography, and overall presentation, have a gently crafted hand behind them. It's reminiscent of, but in no way taking from, the likes of Terrence Mallick and others similar in fashion. I didn't find it nearly as pretentious or boring as those works. Yet, I wasn't all too involved with this story or characters. It's short and flows breezily from scene to scene, but I felt an underlying lack of interest in the back of my mind through most of it. A fine effort that could signal better films to come.

Review: Ain't Them Bodies Saints

This is director David Lowery's full-length feature directing debut, and while I was left rather unsatisfied, I can say I look forward to his future work because the man can clearly do some wonderful things with the camera artistically. Ain't Them Bodies Saints has some very good moments - its opening sequence, in particular, being strong and rather exhilarating. But the film eventually loses its grasp with the audience once the pretty thin plot fleshes out into something that is ultimately conventional and lazy. It lacks the hefty emotional core it wishes to develop and sustain. Essentially, it's a film that has much to offer visually and stylistically, but substantially it lacks heft - resulting in a film that isn't bad, but not necessarily memorable.
