A shockingly terrible and soulless summer blockbuster, if this what Universal has planned for the rest of the Dark Universe, then I'm not enthused.

The Mummy marks the start of the so-called Dark Universe (we'll just forget about Dracula Untold, shall we?) but it gets off to a mediocre start. Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella is like that crazy ex-girlfriend you hope will go away - but with more unmitigated power and Russell Crowe is Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde (with a different accent!). There is action and humor, but it never really engaged me - and they try way too hard to push this franchise.

The Mummy (2017) is not really about a mummy.

Alex Kurtzman has been a screenwriter for so long that one wonders why he hasn't helmed a film as a full fledged director. His debut 'The Mummy' shows why unfortunately. He displays minimal competence as an action director but when it comes to storytelling, he chooses to include every idea possible. Further making 'The Mummy' more bloated than it has to be is the constant exposition. Watching 'The Mummy', audiences will be surprised how much of the plot actually deals with the set up for the future films for Universal Studios' planned monster movie shared universe.
Due to its shortcomings and an overly complicated but bloated plot, 'The Mummy' is an only mildly entertaining B-movie horror/adventure in the vein of 'Van Helsing' (2004) or the 'Hellboy' movies and yes, the 1999 Mummy …

The Mummy - Review

"The Mummy" isn't a bad movie, just a "blah" one. Didn't hate it like everyone else, but liked it on a enjoyment level.
There were many promising elements here that I wouldn't call "great", but ideas that were visible in it's presentation. I must admit that plane crash scene was pretty intense and had my heart racing. Good thing that Cruise screaming from the trailer wasn't in the final cut, because that would easily ruin the scene. Sofia Boutella did a decent job playing the Mummy. And that's really it for me when it comes to positives.
The Dark Universe? Holy crap dose that feel forced. Especially with the logo at the beginning. I know the old monster movies did a shared universe, but the way this was executed was pretty embarrassing. And with "The Mummy" being the first …

The Mummy - A Bad Start to the Dark Universe?
TM Reviews - wrote on 06/12/2017
The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, the same guy that wrote the script for the Amazing Spiderman 2. The funny thing is, both of these movies were made to create their own universe. We all know how the spidey universe turned out and to be honest, this isn't much better.
Tom Cruise plays an ex soldier named Nick Mortan.
Tom cruise is an awesome actor and sells every role. He does his own stunts and is very likeable in his movies.
I liked his character but he's kind of a dick. He's just out for himself but as usual Tom cruise sells his character.
Then we have Anabelle Wallis as Jenny. An archeologist, who basically tells Tom Cruise where he needs to go.
Her character is literally a damsel in distress. I thought we were pass this, but apparently not. Probably not the best timing …

This is supposed to jump-start Universal's whole monster cinematic universe thing (technically Dracula Untold was supposed to start it, but no one liked that one so second time's the charm?). This has Tom Cruise so... maybe it will work out better?
