An adventure story with little sense of adventure. While not an entire waste, I was unfortunately disappointed by "In the Heart of the Sea."

Deserved to do better in theaters - this "true story that inspired-Moby Dick" finds the crew of the Essex, a whaling vessel, attacked by a sperm whale and subsequently lost at sea. Much like Master and Commander, the most exciting parts are watching the action at sea. Though it does drag in parts, it has a powerful ending and it is well-cast. Not Ron Howard's best, but certainly worthy of watching.

Moby Dick

Von was handelt In The Heart Of The Sea? Es gibt so viele Möglichkeiten, Ron Howards letzten Film zu beschreiben. Es ist die Verfilmung des Berichts "In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex" von Nathaniel Philbrick.

"The tragedy of the Essex is the story of men. And a Demon."
When I was young, I had a huge reading book about Moby Dick. I gazed at the rich illustrations for hours and eagerly I read about the adventures of Ishmael aboard the Pequod. And I can still see the final drawing before my eyes, with Captain Ahab hanging in the ropes of his harpoon against Moby Dick diving into the ocean. Maybe my expectations were too high for "In the Heart of the Sea" and I hoped to see a similar scene. Unfortunately, it wasn't really a movie about a battle between man and whale. It was more something like "Stranded". But taking place on sea. The rivalry between Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain Pollard (Benjamin Walker) was more interesting than the whaling itself. And did you watch the trailer? …

Whaling Expedition

'In the Heart of the Sea' is based on the true story that in turn was the basis for the popular novel 'Moby Dick'. It does have a biographical feel to the proceedings, in some regard, but this is also trying to be a rousing sea-going adventure at the same time. It's a solid narrative, from beginning to end. You have one of the survivors of the voyage (now in old age) relating the experience to the man who would craft the 'Moby Dick' story from parts of the tale. The actual whaling expedition is played out by some strong actors. Solid direction from Howard made the dangers of sea travel more prevalent. And the effects of the whales were convincing enough. So why was I lacking engagement? I honestly don't know. Outside of all the characters lacking depth, there's not much wrong …
