It's hard as a modern viewer to be that impressed by "Giant." Glorious in production but laborious in story, this melodrama illustrating the changing ways of the Old West into the New isn't a film I'd call a definitive classic.

Taking the saying "everything's big in Texas" and running with it, this massive romantic-drama sports a top flight cast and an engaging battle of wills versus social change. Elizabeth Taylor gives arguably her most complete and confident performance as the strong wiled wife of a bigshot cattle rancher (Hudson). Rock Hudson underplays his role admirably compared with Taylor's strong if more showy performance. The movie's length is daunting though.

An involving drama, with some great performances from the three leads. It's a long sprawling epic that never once felt boring. Though, watching in two parts does help. What sets this film apart from similar titles like 'Gone With the Wind' is the portrayal of the themes encompassed within the story. Bigotry towards races and sexes, evolving society of a growing America, differences in lifestyle and ideology, and family relations through hardship. All of these points come through best in the smaller moments. It's quite entertaining.
