An entertaining take of the CIA involvement in Nicaragua's drug issue. The direction was clever, making it look light while telling a heavy serious material. Tom Cruise is just entertaining to watch.

Having watched several movies and/or TV series depicting all or part of the rise of Pablo Escobar, and the many people involved, American Made was still a fascinating look into one of those men, Barry Seal. While Cruise may not look like Seal (much as he also doesn't look like Jack Reacher per the books) he still plays him with his typical charm, with equal parts luck and skill accounting for his rise and ultimate fall. Liberties are taken, for sure, but overall I think it hits more than misses.

It’s a bizarre story that exposes not only the hypocrisy of American foreign policy, but also its sheer incompetence, as the C.I.A. uses and abuses anyone who they think will be useful and then throw them to the wolves when they outlive that usefulness. Barry Seal himself comes across as a likeable but amoral rogue in much the same way as Johnny …
