Sion Sono is a master of subversion - like many, I first experienced his talent in Suicide Club back in 2001 and tried to keep up with his filmography. I went through a big phase of Asian cinema during the early-mid 2000s (a lot of horror, but also more surreal and tragic) and then kind of trailed off. Tag (NOT to be confused with the 2018 comedy) starts off as gore-tastic horror, but moves on to discussions about alternate realities and the role of women in society and video games? And of course you have mini-gun wielding teachers, pig-headed grooms and a cave full of zombie-like schoolgirls. All in a day's work for Sono.
