The DCEU continues its slow demise with the disappointing sequel to the surprisingly charming 2019 superhero movie. This feels like a first draft of an idea for a sequel. We see these evil Greek goddesses up to no good, we see Billy Batson in a crisis of confidence, we see his foster brother fall in love with the new girl in school, plus two or three other storylines jumping around. It’s a shame because I really like the original Shazam movie. I will say that it is not annoying or obnoxious or even a bad movie but it’s very inoffensive and bland. It’s just under two hours and it could have easily been ninety minutes instead.

There's nothing inherently wrong with this Shazam! sequel, but I feel something is just missing. It's still fun but just feels more forced this time around. Also still not sure how they got Helen Mirren in this, but she looks like she's having a good time! The creature effects are also impressive.

It moves with the same frolicking pace of the first one, but to a more mechanical beat. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is still a fun time, but nowhere as much as it was back in 2019.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a perfectly fine and enjoyable movie. It does not change the superhero genre or anything like that. If you have seen any superhero movie, you have already watched Shazam 2.
I liked the first film a lot more, as it was tighter in structure and had mature themes.
It is a movie that will fill the empty void in your life.
I liked the Sam Rami-like dark scenes that reminded me of his Spider-Man trilogy, also present in the first movie. There is one death scene involving someone possessed by one of the villains and ordered to walk off the building, and you hear the body hit the ground (off-camera) while a kid looks on in utter shock. I did not expect to go that far, but I respect it for doing it either way.
I like Zachary Levi, but my biggest problem …
