While it's not perfect, Adam McKay and a stacked cast provide some meaty and sometimes too on-the-nose satire about how mankind are essentially ostriches when it comes to dealing with anything remotely negative about the future: pop music, Twitter (or X) posts, TikTok and soundbites. The vast population truly would care more about a pop-star breakup than a world-ending comet and would blindly follow their leader of choice, even if it meant ignoring what is right in front of them. Truly a film for our times.

Another overlong and overwrought satire from Adam McKay's collection of diminishing returns, "Don't Look Up" mistakes snark for wit and self-importance for urgency.

The allegory is strong with this one. As a healthcare worker who's constantly battling misinformation about the virus (almost as much as fighting the virus itself), I sympathize with the characters in this movie. And I 100% believe that if it was a comet, rather than a virus, it would have been handled this way. If there was an extinction-level event hitting the Earth, I would spend the last moments exactly as the main character did. It also teaches a good lesson in tuning off the panic, and those that perpetuate it for their gain, and turning to those that matter the most: family and friends. This is a great movie that (purposely) cuts a little close to reality.

All-star satire of Armageddon with lots of padding

As far as Adam McKay movies go, this was not as annoying as I feared it would be.

I've tried to like a lot of his movies that I've seen. But his work always seems smug or pretentious. The only one that I genuinely liked was The Other Guys (2010). But this was not too bad. But it does not always stick the landing when it comes to mixing the story with the satirical elements.

The basic premise is these scientists (DiCaprio, Lawrence) discover a new comet is heading directly for Earth. And it will destroy mankind with 100% certainty. But the world and political leaders won't take it seriously. Or seriously enough.

That setup is actually a solid choice for political satire like a Dr. Strangelove except with an environmental theme. The movie seems aware of the gravity facing the …

Don't Look Up - Review

"We really did have everything, didn't we? I mean, when you think about it."

Leonardo DiCaprio, easily one of the best parts of this crowded cast. Both funny and dramatic. The freak out scene on live TV was some of the best acting from him. I watched that scene so many times.

The movie itself I found a bit iffy. It's long, the editing is strange, and it's one of those movies that tries to fit in every single famous actor in one movie. But in a weird way, in some over the top, not subtle way, I found the movie to be brilliant at times. It had its moments of anxiety with some scary moments involving people in power, who during a global crisis only see the opportunity to make themselves even richer. The world rest in the hands of leaders who don't really care about human life.
