While narratively the film jumps between romance, mystery, court-room drama and coming-of-age all rolled into one - Daisy Edgar-Jones is a standout as Kya Clark - the Marsh Girl to the locals. Garret Dillahunt and David Strathairn are effective in small roles as her abusive father and caring lawyer respectively. While it really starts to strain its 2-hour running time, it does have a great kicker of an ending.

"Where the Crawdads Sing" stradels separate plot lines and a multitude of genres (romance, coming-of-age, mystery, courtroom drama, thriller), but it never once decides on a consistent tone or finds a way to weave these traits into a compelling and convincing watch.
