There is actually a solid family drama at the center of this monster flick. The sibling rivalry between the brothers and Nicolas Cage's guidance as their father is compelling stuff. The monsters have an utterly bizarre design and are memorably weird. Don't expect them on-screen that much. If you can see them. A major problem holding this movie back is the camera-work is horrible. It is constantly set on shaky-cam even when it's just a dialogue-heavy scene.

Arcadian teases you in the opening with some kind of apocalyptic... something with Nicholas Cage running for his life but then just fast-forwards 15 years and never mentions it again. All we know is that humanity is on the brink of extinction, scary things come out at night and teenagers are still a pain in the ass even in the post-apocalyptic countryside. I do have to say the creature design (when we finally get there) is interesting but the plot is mostly filler with under-developed characters and world-building. A so-so offering but still worth a watch if you like the genre.

"Arcadian" squeezes what is most likely the last few drops of originality and substance out of the "mosters and the apocalypse" concept. But it nevertheless works thanks to main characters who I actually found myself caring about and its frighteningly unique creatures.
