The changes that Douglas Sirk's "Imitation of Life" makes to the original and the source material they're based on are all for the better, as they help this social drama about race and gender in the mid-20th century become the most perfected version.

Douglas Sirk's lavish melodrama uses vivid color and heightened emotions to convey its egalitarian message of relationships versus racial barriers. The cinematography and costume design are downright stunning sometimes. The performances are heartfelt if on the hokey side while the story is certainly touching.

Like with most movies made around this time dealing with race, I have mixed feelings about the movie. I love the questions it poses. But, why do the black people always have to be in some kind or servant role? In any case, I liked the movie.
