Overlong and scattershot war movie that tries to also be a comedy and a heist flick. Donald Sutherland is very funny as a hippie tank commander; Don Rickles gets some good jokes as the con-artist of the gang; and Clint Eastwood is cool as ever.

Having grown up with this movie I can in no way give an unbiased opinion. My mom had a crush on Clint Eastwood since she was a teenager, and this was him in his yummy prime. This movie is just a delight, all the cast is at the top of their games. Don Rickles (whom you just don't see in enough movies) is at his acerbic best. Donald Sutherland as a stoner, hippie seems somewhat anachronistic, but with a movie this awesome you let it slide. (Especially cause I could use anachronistic, which is one of those words you just don't get to use often enough.) Anyways if ya haven't seen it, go now, quit wasting time on the internet, it'll still be here when the movie is over.

Clint Eastwood at his prime heads up a brilliant cast of offbeat hustlers and crackpots including Telly Savalas as a hard nosed sergeant and the pick of them all, Donald Sutherland, as a hilariously anachronistic hippy tank commander who goes into battle bearing country & western and paint balls. The plot is a marriage of The Dirty Dozen and The Italian Job and is never afraid to chop and change genres; the war elements providing the action and pyrotechnics and …
