The theatrical cut of "Kingdom of Heaven" is rather murky and its characters aren't particularly deep, but I actually prefer it over Ridley Scott's bombastic and overrated "Gladiator." Furthermore, if you truly want to see something great, then the Director's Cut is just the ticket. The exciting battle sequences and grandeur are all still present, while the story this time is told with more clarity and enriched with essential character development. Except for Scott's own "Blade Runner - The Final Cut," no alternative version of a movie has done more to improve its state after its original release.

This is Ridley Scott's best epic to date. Not Gladiator. Bigger story, more fleshed out characters, and better action scenes, and an awesome soundtrack.

A weak lead and a plot straight out of a cereal packet hampers this film greatly. The born on the wrong side of the blanket tedium is beyond groan worthy. Bloom's shortcomings were painfully easy to hear when rousing his troops on battle's eve. This is no Henry V moment. The action sequences and visuals are stunning and saves it from bargain bin B-movie.

Vertrauen

"Kingdom Of Heaven" by Yojimbo

Another historical epic from Ridley Scott, this time set during the crusades. I won't waste time making a critique of the visuals because, well, it's Ridley Scott. As for the script, it's easier to make a straight comparison with Gladiator. Gladiator worked so well because it had a charismatic lead supported by an excellent cast of well rounded characters who existed within a believable world recreated through it's social and political background. None of this is in evidence here however. It's not that the dialogue or characterisation is bad, it's just there's not enough of it. Bloom is far too bland to be the kind of leading man to carry this kind of film, and whenever two characters started to converse, the dialogue was always limited to an exchange of a couple of soundbites before …

The Most Underrated Movie Of All Time

Norrin - wrote on 01/18/2012

Monsterously underrated and brilliant, this is Ridley Scott at his absolute best. It is easily the best Medieval movie of all time, and one of the best movies of all time period. While the Theatrical Cut was terrific, the Director's Cut is even better, so make sure you rent or buy the Director's Cut. Ridley Scott pulls off his usual brilliance when it comes to the look and feel of the movie, as it plunges you back into the Middle Ages at the time of Crusades. The acting is superb across the board. The action is intense and epic. The story is engrossing from start to finish. I am not sure why this movie does not get the respect it deserves as it is just as good as Ridley Scott's equally excellent, and far more popular, "Gladiator."
