A little overbearing at times, but it's spectacularly stylish, and it's made more appealing by its blend of modern pop music and its period piece setting.

The film is about a writer falls in love with a prostitute as he tries to write a song for the duke who becomes jealous of the love affair and tries to put an end to it. This movie was messy and annoying. The songs in the film are random to me and the movie is like a fairy tale gone wrong.

Finally got a chance to rewatch this, and I loved it even more this time. What a film! No director has a signature touch like Baz Luhrmann, and Moulin Rouge! lives up to that with it's grand scale, elaborate sets, glamorous costumes, and unique music. Kidman and McGregor both give great performances; Kidman deserved an Oscar for Best Actress but was only nominated. A truly rewarding film experience.

Moulin Rouge review

"Love that will live forever." A romantic well crafted musical which revolves around a young English poet/writer, Christian (Ewan MacGregor), and a sick star of the Moulin Rouge, cabaret actress and courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman). Satine mistakes Christian for the Duke (Richard Roxburgh) which brings out the films slight humor. Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo) has a pivotal role in informing Christian about the truth. The songs used and revived here were either hysterical or beautiful depending on the tempo. The sets were impressive together with the wardrobe. Its original score was really from Romeo and Juliet and the rest of the songs just inserted to make the list more interesting. In this reviewers view, the leads didn't have enough time to fall in love. Everything …

Commendable

I thought this film was way overrated when it came out because everyone I knew seemed to have loved it. After five years, I rewatched it again and I still think it’s overrated although not as much as before. Sure, I commend this picture for having a great cinematography and wonderful clothing, but story-wise, it’s nothing ground-breaking. It’s pretty much your boy-falls-in-love-with-girl-but-they-can’t-be-together-because-another-boy-is-interested-in-the-girl story but set in a musical. But what makes this film above average is Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Nicole Kidman is elegant in every scene she’s in without sacrificing her signature ice queen personality. Ewan McGregor has this boyish charm that one cannot help but love. When you put them together in one scene, they …

Impressive

I was very impressed with this movie when it was released! I wasn't exactly sure what to expect and being that at the time there was an onslaught of musical movies coming to the big screen at this time I really didn't know what to make of it all. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman made an incredible pair, they both had their big moments through out the film. Moulin Rouge' is a truly modern musical; Luhrman has taken hold of an old & cliched genre, injected it knowingly with 21st Century irony, imbued it with great energy, imagination & talent; & has produced a post-modern masterpiece, one of the most audacious & original films seen in a very long time - & one for which he deserves every success. All in all, I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys musicals.
