Danny and his team had a good go at it back in 2001, but the act has lost its charm. My patience with these mechanical and sometimes ludicrous plotlines has run dry, and the exhausting "Ocean's Thirteen" wears its flourishes as a mask to appear more entertaining and thoughtful than it really is.

A lot of time is spent on the planning of the caper, but, at this point, we know there's going to be no development of these paper-thin characters. Al Pacino has never been more of a caricature of himself, but, somehow, it's a whole lot of fun.

Recaptures the Fun of the Original

Well this was a pleasant surprise. Ocean's Thirteen, the threequel to the excellent Ocean's Eleven and the sequel to the almost-unwatchable Ocean's Twelve, is a fun and light conclusion to the Ocean's Trilogy. It's not as much fun as the original, but it's a vast improvement over the terrible sequel. Third chapters hardly ever work, but I commend Ocean's Thirteen for overcoming that trend.
The Ocean group (with the exception of Tess and Isabel) are brought together when Reuben is in poor health due to a massive shock received from being cheated of the rights of a hotel-casino he was planning to open. The con man responsible, Willy Bank, plans to open the hotel-casino himself, and win the prized Five Diamond award as well. Of course, the Ocean gang devise a devious plan of revenge …

"Ocean's Thirteen" by Yojimbo

A ruthless hotel owner cheats Reuben out of his share of the property and so the gang decide to extract retribution by ruining him and taking everything he's got. The Ocean's franchise, although better than the horribly self-indulgent original rat pack film, has never quite lived up to its potential. The first film started great but got rather mechanical and joyless for the second half. The second film started well but the second half was, well, garbage. Third time's the charm however, as the latest chapter is a big improvement over them both. The balance of comedy and action is maintained throughout the film at last, there's no Julia Roberts to be seen (yes!) and Pacino makes a much more charismatic villain than the inanimate Andy Garcia character. There's also plenty of comic asides …

Another time, probably for the last

Ocean's 13 is definitely an improvement over the debacle that was Ocean's 12, but it just doesn't capture the enthusiasm and energy of Ocean's 11. First off, the gang is all back (with the exception of Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who really just got in the way in the last two movies) and a new caper is at hand. This one involves the 11 rigging a casino after it's owner (Pacino) screws Gould's Reuben out of his share (which leads to a heart attack or depression attack of some kind).
The movie is mostly entertaining when it's preparing and pulling off the caper. However, some minor plot devices nearly torpedo the film, such as Affleck and Caan's characters being caught up in some union revolt in Mexico, Matt Damon's Linus sporting a big nose purely for a gag, and some …
