An excellent movie about the famous sergeant despite its old-fashioned schmaltziness. It also poses strong questions for anyone facing moral dilemmas.

Gary Cooper's human and humble portrayal of Sergeant Alvin York is what grounds the film and makes it a feelgood and triumphant story that manages to escape most war film cliches. If not for Cooper's performance, I think the film would be purely average.

A good film about an American war hero who performed one amazing feat in battle. The film follows Alvin York from a young ruffian, to a religious pacifist to a religious soldier. I thought the film was effective in all its sections, and I really enjoyed its themes. It is pro war which does not work that well for world war one, but it explains it self much better I feel than some anti war films, since it actually examines each side. Some good performances here, and a story worth following. The fact that it is based on a true story makes it so amazing.

Based on the life of Sgt. Alvin York, who single-handedly captured over 120 German troops during combat in World War 1, Gary Cooper shines in the title role.
"Sgt. York" is a pretty good movie, but there are better ones. It has romance, moral conflict and fair action scenes.
The acting is pretty well done, especially Cooper's performance. Many of the actors, especially the one who plays York's younger brother, seem to just recite their lines instead of making the words coming from their mouths their own.
The directing is also pretty well done, but it's not spectacular. The battle scenes could have been done much better.
The battle scenes are well done, although it is pretty obvious when the scene is shot in a studio, as the sky in the background is obviously fake. …
