Brutal but beautiful
The Road is a faithful adaption of Cormac McCarthy's masterpiece, and successfully translates his story of a dying world and the father and son trying to survive in it. Viggo Mortensen plays 'The Man', and is perfectly cast as someone willing to do anything to protect his son. He also looks like someone who has endured ten years of life after the end of the world, with a full beard, gaunt face and haunted eyes. Smit-McPhee is believeable as 'the boy' born after the apocalypse, and the relationship between the father and son is believable and affecting.
