It gets right up my tits when a producer carps on about his or her new film being 'much darker' - and then something like this shows up. Not as gothic as I'd like (I would do it in black and white vintage film stock and set in 1938), it still stays true to the original comic (as if I care) while carving out a stylish niche for itself. Let me first say, I am a BIG Bond fan and lusted after this film even before it went into production. I lurked on those web-sites that crticised Daniel Craig's portrayal when the trailers came out, defending his acting and looks right up until the day I excitedly ran to the cinema with my mates to see it. I looked forward to this so much I was desperate to like it. I'd also been swayed by those big budget and box office numbers and that astounding cast (to say nothing of the hype and subsequent awed reviews). But I found the plot too layered and the pacing too busy, the chase sequences and fight scenes lackluster and the dark side/good side emo agonising too much too bear (I hate it in a film where everyone blames themselves for the death of someone when it is glaringly not their fault).
