Visually Stunning But Very Different and Unique

Quality of Story: An interesting concept. This movie spans the creation of the earth into a normal American child during the 1960s. There really is not much dialog to this film as it is mostly told through visual cues. I think because of this it can seem to lack depth. Many people came out of the theater wondering the purpose. I feel that I know the purpose but that didn’t make the movie more satisfying. A bit week compared to what it could have been.
Cinematography: Stunning. Breathtaking. Any work that ends in ing can describe this movie’s pictures. Many will disagree but for me personally, it reminded me a lot of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Without this, the picture would not exist. It is similar to Malick’s other films with sweeping cameras, bright colors, and often photo realistic imagery. No doubt the best I will see this year.
Direction/Acting: Acting is as you would expect. Great. There is not much dialog so that makes the acting easier for some (Pitt). A solid movie with no wooden characters. The mother is loving, child actors surprisingly good and Penn does well for what he has. Direction is superb but the movie could have been shortened by 10 minutes for my taste.
Musical Score/Music: When present, this is another strength. Great job by the composer. Good sound effects also carry this movie. The music and the cinematography are the most important pieces to this movie.
Entertainment: Many will not find this entertaining. I did. If you go in with expectations that this is not really a movie but more about a visual experience, you will be much more satisfied. This is my kind of movie. Visually and musically near perfect. The story lacks the punch I was hoping but maybe that is what Malick wanted. Worthy of the awards if not for something new and beautiful to see. See it but make sure you have patience and understand what this movie is.
