Things We Lost in the Fire

Great Performances Transform Average Story

Basically what this movie has done is take an average story and throw in a superb cast, good camera work, and a way of telling an emotional story and what you are left with is pretty damn good movie.

Del Toro and Berry are superb and Duchovny, surprisingly, is not mundane. Del Toro will surely be mentioned for Best Actor come awards time. Berry also surprised me. I have never been a fan of hers and never been impressed with any of her acting or choice of roles. This movie changed that. She was strong, beautiful and does a great job. I could see her being nominated.

Now, lets get to the story. Yeah it has been told before - some husband dies and she falls in love with his friend. Well, that may not be the case here. The friend is loser who her husband grew up with. This puts an interesting spin on things. The flash backs, the flash fowards all play a part in developing the characters. I felt I actually knew all the characters lives in the short time I had seen them on screen. It had incredible character development.

So basically what we have is an average story with well developed characters and incredible acting. If you are sensitive at all and enjoy a sad movie, this is for you. If action or plot twists are what you enjoy, stay away. The re-watch value of this movie is minimal but at least it's great once.
