One of the Best Musicals Ever
Alex - wrote on 11/02/07
In a movie year full of sequels, we are finally given a very original piece of film, not to mention a great one. I have not seen a better musical since Moulin Rouge (and "Across" may be better). Right now, I am calling it one of the best movies of the year.
The acting was superb, which included a talented young musical cast. The two leads (Wood and Sturgess) were fantastic. The rest followed suit. But a lot of movies have great acting, so why is this one so much better?
Simple. It was well paced, very well song, and very well shot. I am not really a fan of Taymor (I despised "Titus") but some how she pulls it off. There were a couple completely out there scenes in which I didn't understand what was going on. But, actually it made sense. They were high on something other than life, and nothing maid sense to them.
The musical numbers were also virtually perfect. They told the story and they told the story fast. Unlike "Dream Girls," this one has mostly short songs and lots of things going on in those songs. I am not a huge musical fan (Yankee Doodle Dandy being one of my favorites), but I do like the great ones.
With a second viewing, it could make my top 100 list and I might even consider it the best movie of the year. But, be warned, if you don't like trippy musicals (Moulin Rouge comes to mind) then stay far away from this one.

hmm, sounds interesting. I too, didn't like Titus. I did feel that some of the songs in Dream Girls went on for far too long. I may give this a shot sometime.
