Good Movie, But Not a Good Musical

Though I know nothing previously about Sweeney Todd, I enjoyed this movie. As a musical, it didn't do a whole lot as I didn't find any of the tunes outstanding. They were not bad though. Depp is magnificent and deserves a nomination. But, for Burton, there are far better (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Pee Wee's Big Adventure).
Sweeney Todd almost works better not as a musical. As I said, none of the songs really made me sing along or in fact, I don't remember the words to any of the songs. It is bloody but not gruesome. There are a few twists that keep you thinking and the cinematography (as always with Burton) is wonderful. I wouldn't quite put this up there as one of the best movies, but it is close. Maybe a second viewing will do wonders, but I find that unlikely. Good, well, done, but not great or anything new.
