Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, Firefly and Dollhouse, is by far the director with the most devoted fanbase ever, and there's a reason for that. After the roaring success of the Buffy television series, Whedon busied himself with creating the most recognisable sci-fi television series in history, mashing several genres into one exhilirating show effectively.
That show, Firefly, was praised by critical acclaim, although it faired very poorly with the home viewers, and was unfortunatly cancelled mid-season. But from that spawned a film adaptation, financed in great part by the massive fandom that sprang from Firefly.
Although Serenity is now hailed as a striking example of good sci-fi filmaking, it will definitely not appeal to everyone. It has a very unique style and atmosphere, combined with Whedon's trademark witty and mixed dialect, that will probably divide its audience straight in half. Still, it is a masterpiece in my opinion. Whedon knows how to juggle an ensemble just the right way. Great performances across the board, especially from Firefly recurrings Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk and Adam Baldwin. Another great performance by Chiwitel Ejiofor as the mysterious and ruthless Operative.
Amazing sci-fi moments such as the space battle between the Alliance and the Reavers, combined with a smart and witty script, make for a great film.
