"Princess Mononoke" by Yojimbo

Miyazaki's medieval epic is rather more down to earth than much of his other work, featuring the quest of a young prince to find the spirit of the forest to lift a demon's curse that threatens his life. I'm not entirely sure who this film is aimed at; it's too ponderous and lacking in humour for children and a little simplistic in content for adults. The eco message is a little clumsy (essentially humans=bad and nature=good) and whiffs faintly of New Age BS. But it is attractively drawn and scored and is considerably less schmaltzy and contrived than many of it's American counterparts.
