Two British soldiers, two stranded nurses and a South African officer attempt to reach the Allied lines and safety when they are cut off from their convoy in the African desert. Typical of the kind of stiff upper-lipped war film of the time, Ice Cold In Alex marks itself out from the crowd by being rather more understanding of the ordinary German soldier and tells a tale of co-operation and mutual respect in the face of adversity. The format is very much a hybrid of a war film and a road movie as we follow the ambulance on its journey making it feel a little episodic, and so many of their problems are motor repair orientated that it does tend to feel like a Top Gear challenge at times. What makes the film however is the strong cast of British stalwarts and some well directed and tense sequences. Not the most exciting tale of wartime derring-do you will ever see, but it's intelligent and well acted with a strong moral message.
