"Finally, Sunday!" by Yojimbo

When her boss is accused of a double murder, his trusting secretary takes it upon herself to investigate the crime and clear his name. Francois Truffaut's final film is an homage to Hollywood gumshoe movies from the golden age. A suitably glamorous Fanny Ardant is an appealing protagonist and the cinematography uses the film noir visual template to create some very nice imagery. I personally found the tone uneven however, as its light almost playful touch doesn't quite sit properly with a story of murder and intrigue. Neither a straight comedy nor a gritty thriller, Finally Sunday! falls between two stools and so the rather flimsy plot ends up coming across as more Scooby Doo than Raymond Chandler. Worth seeing for curiosity value, but this detective story was a little too soft boiled for my taste.
