"Divergence" by Yojimbo

A cop obsessed with his missing girlfriend investigates the disappearance of a corrupt millionaire's son and finds aid in the unlikely form of a hired killer. Divergence has some obvious pretensions to the Infernal Affairs school of HK cop thrillers, but in the execution it doesn't really measure up thanks to some clumsy direction that is rather too fond of colour filters and slow motion; in fact at least one of the flashback devices is very badly judged indeed. The sub plot of the missing girlfriend is also far too sentimental which is not helped at all by the syrupy score that gives the sensation of someone pouring treacle into your ear canal. There are a couple of decently staged shoot outs and Daniel Wu's assassin is actually quite charismatic, but the plot doesn't really tie together very well so the big "reveals" are difficult to care about. Not terrible, but far too generic and mediocre in its execution to challenge the best examples of the genre.
