After becoming trapped in a transport pod with the last two Crite eggs in existence, Charlie awakens on an abandoned space station 53 years later with the crew of the salvage ship who found him floating in space. Wackiness ensues.
Critters 4 is - mercifully - the final instalment of the Critters franchise and reintroduces the sci-fi element that was abandoned in the previous film, which gives scope for the script to rip off the Alien franchise as well as Gremlins. In fact, oddly enough, Critters 4 preempts a fair few of the ideas that made their way into the Alien films that came later, to the point where I couldn't help wondering if Joss Whedon had actually seen it himself; Alien: Resurrection is often so similarly plotted it almost seems like a remake! The cheap effects - the film looks like an average episode of Red Dwarf - and cliche-ridden script are bolstered by watchable performances by Angela Bassett and especially Brad Dourif and the sci-fi setting makes it a little more interesting than the puerile horror-comedy formula of the rest of the Critters movies.
As an oddity it may be worth a look for fans of cheesy sci-fi B-movies, but - and this is a big but - it still isn't funny.
