Sandra Bullock plays a single subway attendant Lucy whose job isn't very interesting as she spends all day long sitting in a small booth. Her only wish is to see the world... and to catch the attention of a handsome man (Peter Gallagher) she takes a subway token from each every morning. One day he is pushed to the tracks by some teens and knocked unconscious. Fortunately Lucy sees that and jumps to the tracks and saves him. The man goes to a hospital but when his family gets there they mistakenly think that she is his fiancée.
Lucy doesn't have the heart to tell them she isn't, especially because they are so nice and provide her with the family affection that she has been missing. It gets real interesting when Lucy slowly starts falling for the Peter's attractive brother (Bill Pullman) who suspects something fishy is going on but doesn't let that get in the way of his feeling strongly for Lucy, too. Tension mounts knowing that when the coma man wakes, Lucy will be exposed as a fake.
