Sweet home indeed!

Reese Witherspoon portrays a southern girl who had escaped her past to reinvent herself in New York City. After accepting a proposal of marriage from her rich handsome boyfriend (Patrick Dempsey), there is just one problem - she needs to get her high school and childhood sweetheart / husband Jake (Josh Lucas) whom she abandoned seven years before to sign the divorce papers. So she high tails it down to Alabama, anxious to get the papers signed so she can get on with her life.
Josh Lucas and Patrick Dempsey are both excellent, and Lucas does a fantastic job of portraying the tenderhearted and sensitive, yet brokenhearted, husband of while Dempsey is a real nice guy, honestly and deeply in love with Mel. I was braced for him to suddenly become a jerk, but the movie gave me a pleasant surprise in not pulling that Hollywood maneuver and I was completely torn as to which one I wanted to win Reese in the end. I loved Ethan Embry as Bobby Ray and Candice Bergen is always good at playing a bitch (and Dempsey's Mayor Mom).
To say that Witherspoon is portrayed as a self -serving and self centered character is an understatement nevertheless if you fancy a night in with a lightweight, predictable romantic comedy - you could do much worse than this.
