Sad and Depressing!

Precious is an illiterate sixteen year old obese teenager who is now into her second pregnancy (an incestuous pregnancy, I might add by her own dad). She has an abusive mother, Mary, who puts her down both verbally and physically at every opportunity. Mary does not have a job and spends her time sitting at home awaiting her welfare check. Even when Precious has an opportunity to attend a good school, her deadbeat mother simply wants her to stay at home and cook. Despite all these setbacks, Precious is presented with an opportunity to attend an alternative education program and eventually finds a mentor at the school named Ms. Rain (Paula Patton). With the help of her new teacher, Precious gains the courage to stand up to her abusive mother and takes control of her own life.
It was incredibly hard to witness the torture that Precious was going through and I gotta be honest, it turned me off the movie but this is definitely not one that I would soon forget. It is a compelling story of a girl finding strength and purpose in an abjectly miserable life. Garnering two Oscar wins and multiple, smaller awards, Precious is well-acted by a veritable group of unknowns including first timer Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidebe, pop singer Mariah Carey gives a surprisingly good performance as the social worker trying to solve Precious' problems and singer Lenny Kravitz is wonderful as a nurse who befriends Precious when she is the hospital. Oscar Winner Mo'Nique is flawless as Mary, the abominable depraved mother who makes it her duty to ridicule Precious, I hated her with a passion.
