A national soccer coach has been murdered in front of a stadium of fans and his famed diamond ring, the aptly named "Pink Panther", has been stolen. Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Kevin Kline) comes up with a grand plan to receive the French Medal of Honor. He promotes bumbling, incompetent detective Jacques Clouseau (Steve Martin) to Inspector, to look for the killer, and divert all the news media attention towards his sure to fail attempts. Meanwhile, Dreyfus assembles a crack team to solve the murder undercover. Gendarme Gilbert Ponton (Jean Reno) is assigned to be Clouseau's partner in order to keep track of him just to make sure Clouseau does not find too many clues.
Steve Martin's portrayal of Inspector Clouseau was too much of a caricature of the original Seller's version which I loved but the damburger bit with him was good and Jean Reno manages to put on a good performance. If you like Steve Martin or slap stick, this is your kind of film.
Fairly entertaining, but not comparable with Sellers's version.
