The movie starts out with a young Indian named Kenai (voiced by Joaquin Phoenix) about to go through the ceremony with his tribe in which he will receive his totem, and become a man. He receives the totem of love, which is a source of humiliation to him, because his brothers received totems of guidance and wisdom - more manly things.
When Kenai's brother is killed by a bear, Kenai takes it upon himself to seek vengeance against the bear resulting in a cruel trick of fate by the ancient spirits who magically transform him into a bear to see the errors of his way. Now with young cub Koda who lost his mother, Kenai will learn lessons about tolerance, acceptance and understanding of others.
The music by Phil Collins and Tina Turner is admirable and the moose brothers, played by those "MacKenzie Brothers" Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, are hilarious. Overall, it was funny, sad and touching, especially Kenai's final decision
