Based on the short story by E.L. Doctorow, the movie chronicles 10 years in the hardscrabble life of a beautiful 15 year old red-headed Southern girl young woman (played by Jessica Chastain) who after living in foster homes with a childhood history of abuse travels across the country, falling in and out of bed with various, always unsuitable men. Unable to distinguish love from desire, she falls prey to, among others, a tattoo artist and secret drug dealer named Coco (Rupert Friend), a lecherous uncle (Dermot Mulroney), a butch lesbian guard (Frances Fisher) and a born-again Christian (Michael Vartan), who (of course is the scion of a wealthy Oklahoma family) but turns out to be a fanatical, wife-beating bastard. Still, by the end of the film, she is resolute in her attempt to make something of herself despite the misfortune that usually intervenes as she searches for the life she yearns. Will Jolene ever find happiness? Starring Chazz Palminteri, Dermot Mulroney, Rupert Friend, Michael Vartan and Denise Richards!
