Much in the same vein as Jean Renoir's own Grand Illusion, this is a more lighthearted and engaging drama of POW escapees risking all to get away; some intense moments, particularly the final escape that includes a funeral procession and a tense train ride. It certainly shows shades of Stalag 17, but Renoir makes this simple story his own. Final Grade: A-
