Slow, but effective

The Intended is a sweaty, filthy drama that takes its time to tell its story. It benefits from strong acting by leading actress Janet McTeer and key supporting performances from Olympia Dukakis as a wisened villager and Brenda Fricker as the leader of the religious compound that rules with an iron fist. There are a lot of revelations in this damp, atmospheric movie (unfortunately some that don't ring true) and it has an enigmatic ending, but there's something profoundly disturbing and effective in the third act that it retains a strong hold in the memory. This is definitely not a movie for mainstream tastes. Final grade: B-
