The Cabin in the Woods was written by Joss Whedon (Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the upcoming The Avengers) and Drew Goddard and directed by Drew Goddard, as well. This film is one of the most inventive, funny, clever, and original horror movies I've ever seen. There's a little bit of Scream formula in this, in which Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard basically play around with the genre and poke fun at the cliches, but with this film they take it to the absolute extreme. There's so many clever twists and turns that by the end you do not know what else can POSSIBLY come. And believe me, you will not see it this one coming. All of these elements work very well with the whole concept and only makes the film more enjoyable. It's just great fun.
Surprisingly good performances from the entire cast, lots of self-aware and clever humor, easily likable characters, and an extremely well written script makes The Cabin in the Woods an incredibly enjoyable and very scary thrill ride. The film isn't perfect, but Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard created an experience that's wholly original and, at times, pretty enthralling, with a climax that takes all of the film's silly ideas and concepts to its bloody extreme. It's a gory feast for the eyes. Be sure to see it. Believe me, you won't regret it.
