Review: The Pact

Goodbye found-footage, you little cheap gimmick you! Say hello to Nicholas McCarthy's The Pact, an engaging horror film that is genuinely scary and occasionally pretty intense. It's that rare horror film nowadays that uses mood and atmosphere as a tool to tell the story.
There's no denying that we've seen this type of horror film many times before. We have a pretty girl, a spooky house, some dark family history, and a character who can communicate with the beyond. It begins cliched and sometimes very slow, but transcends into a strangely scary mystery as the facts slowly unfold, building to a fantastic climax. Writer/director Nicholas McCarthy injects the film with plenty of suspense and tension, but adds in an intriguing plot and a likable lead character which gives the film more substance in its narrative. There aren't many jump scares, which I'm proud of McCarthy for being able to accomplish. He delivers his scares through the silence and the atmosphere he creates. What's more terrifying than sheer silence?

I have this on my Netflix to-watch list - here's to hoping a to a decent horror film from this year (I have been sorely disappointed for the most part this year).
