Review: The Frankenstein Theory

The Frankenstein Theory is yet another one of those "documentary-style" horror films in which characters film themselves uncover a mystery, and interview people who may be involved. In this case, an ambitious young man (Kris Lemche) brings along three of his friends and a camera man to get information and search for Frankenstein, who he believes to be a real, living individual. On their journey, they meet the typical creepy and edgy, yet friendly guy who knows the area and carries a shot gun. This man is played by Timothy V. Murphy. As they live in a small cabin in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but snowy forests and freezing wind, Frankenstein is out there, and he's pretty pissed off.

The trailer made this movie look pretty damn good, and something I may have fun watching. Jeez, was I dead wrong. Watching The Frankenstein Theory was like looking into the rear-end of cinema. This film, directed by Andrew Weiner, is a poorly made, snooze-fest of a horror movie. Weiner had such great opportunities to build up the tension as these six people may face a brutal death from Mr. Frankenstein Monster himself. But nothing. I don't recall there being an ounce of suspense in this so-called horror film. And what tries to scare you comes off as unintentionally funny. Infact, the most fun you'll have watching this film is laughing at how dumb it is. The film features characters who make more and more stupid decisions as the film progresses, and instead of rooting for them to find this big monster, you root for the monster to rip them apart.

It's so disappointing because this film had so much potential. It could have been so intense and genuinely scary, but instead it was put in the hands of Andrew Weiner, who gives us mostly dialogue between these boring characters. It's an attempt to build tension, but he just fails so horribly, ultimately making a boring movie. That's what the movie is - boring. Boring as hell. An hour and a half that felt no less than a day and a half. The only good things I could say about this film is that some of the cinematography is gorgeous and that there are large amounts of unintentional laughs you'll get out of this film. The Frankenstein Theory is the first legitimate awful movie of 2013.
