Review: Life of Pi

Beautiful, enriching, and emotionally impactful, Life of Pi is cinematic poetry at some of its most authentic. It's a compelling blend of visual effects and storytelling. I watched the film on Blu-ray/3D, and I must say the 3D was jaw-dropping at many points. The visuals are handled incredibly well, used as a storytelling tool and create a massive spectacle. The CGI tiger, Richard Parker, looks outstanding. The only problem I have with the film is the first half hour to forty minutes during which Pi is being developed, which is obviously crucial, but I felt much of it was unneeded, including a relationship with a female and many other scenes that create nothing but a drag. However, once Pi is faced with a shipwreck (one of the film's many great moments) and is later stuck on the life boat with Richard Parker, I was riveted until the very end. Ang Lee's win for Best Director at the Oscars was rightfully deserved. This is one of the best movies to have been released in 2012.
