Powerful but not enough

Two different stories that slowly become one, and once realization hits you, you'll feel quite a gloomy sadness. The visuals of the movie were awesome, and the moral of the story - without proper, non-exploitative guidance we are all lost souls (my opinion though) - is a good one, and very well implemented. The character of Emilia was, honestly, very annoying and I do not think that the relationship with her would be anything but doomed to self-destruction of all involved. The other characters were really interesting, the father's implacable hope to find and save his son by faith alone, Milo's sorrowful way of coping with the grief, and well, the main character's delusion and forfeiture of any faith at all. However, I can't give it better rating. The story was really powerful when you look deeper into its symbolism, but it is just not appealing enough - I've seen far depressing movies than this one, and with far inferior narratives, but this one I simply do not want to see again. It's a dislike hard to explain.
