What a surprise! "Run Fatboy Run" is a true gem. I'd compare it in tone to another sleeper from this summer, "The Rocker". Both are comedies with just the right mix of raunchiness and sweetness; neither is too gross nor too sappy.
I am now eager to investigate other projects in which Simon Pegg has been involved. I don't think about him being in the realm of other movie "stars", but I sure have liked "Shaun of the Dead", "Hot Fuzz" and now, this.
Very few movies hit the right notes while avoiding cliche, but this is a good example. I mean, from what I'd read (and even from where I thought the movie was going to go after its introduction), I thought Pegg was trying to get in shape to win back his ex-girlfriend. Not really; he has a more genuine purpose.
And his foil (Hank Azaria) isn't the obvious villain. In fact, the simple fact that Pegg just doesn't like the guy is enough to make him the bad guy, whether or not his intentions are obvious.
Anyway, without nitpicking, the fact is that its very funny. You don't have to put as much thought into it as I have to truly enjoy it.
