Targets (1968)

Bullseye on this "Target"

The more I think about it, the more I liked "Targets".

How fun it was to see Boris Karloff playing a nice old man; how you might imagine him in real life. He brought a surprising amount of humor to his role as an aging horror actor well aware of the changing times and trying desperately to retire.

In a parallel story, a young family man prepares to go on an emotionless shooting spree, with only the hint of a cry for help as he tries to make some contact with his oblivious wife.

Their stories converge at a drive-in theater as "monsters" of two generations come face to face. This sequence is intense. And I found the atmosphere nostalgic rather than dated, even reading into it a comment about the rise and fall of the drive-in theater, which in turn perhaps represents the death of the innocence of America.

The pacing is steady, but culminates with the suspenseful payoff. I'd definitely watch it again, and will probably add it to my wish list.
