Practice what you preach ("Get Smart")

At some point during "Get Smart", the tone shifted from a so-so comedy spoof to a pretty exciting action thriller. From that point forward, I can say I really enjoyed it.
But getting there was a little tedious. Steve Carrell's office-mate Rainn Wilson walks the line between physical comedy and actual character development much better in his summer movie, "The Rocker". Actually, I think someone in this production tried too hard to give Carrell a backstory. In a movie like "Get Smart", I don't think the audience really cares about the hero's childhood; they'd rather see more slapstick and cool gadgets.
I don't really remember the original TV series, but the movie doesn't seem to carry a tone that would remain consistent with it. Instead of a favorite show from television's glory days, this "Get Smart" plays like a failed sitcom that is cancelled midway through the season.
