Badly Paced, Forgettable Vampire Flick

After Dark movies tend to fall into one of two categories: fantastically original (see: THE HAMILTONS, THE ABANDONED) or mind-numbingly formulaic (see: PERKINS' 14, LAKE DEAD). PROWL falls into the latter category. Though it begins somewhat intriguingly, with a group of young people being literally delivered to a dilapidated slaughterhouse inhabited by a coven of vampires, it doesn't seem to know what to do with itself after that point. As such, it just dissolves into a poor man's 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, but without any of the tension or effectiveness. Its twist - admittedly predictable but still intriguing - is the only thing that elevates it above total mediocrity, and it comes far too late in the game to contribute to the story in any meaningful way. Ultimately PREY is a wandering, forgettable 30 DAYS knockoff that brings very little of interest to the table - there's nothing scary about it, and its only unique element is wasted. 1.5/4
