Another bland offering from After Dark, FERTILE GROUND is an uninspired and inoffensive ghost story starring an array of uninspired and inoffensive archetypes. There is literally nothing in this film you have not seen, as a horror fan, a dozen or so times in other movies. Creepy old house in the middle of nowhere? Check. A generations-spanning curse? Check. A male family member who begins acting erratic and violent? Check. A grand, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"-style reveal? Check. Main character uncertain if her paranormal experiences are real or all in her head? Check. Is any of this done with any sense of style or originality? No. The few boo scares are not particularly effective, the back story is bland and done-to-death, and the characters are utterly lacking in dimension. Not good, but not terrible either - FERTILE GROUND falls squarely into the realm of interchangeable ghost flicks that are almost completely forgotten (or confused with all the other films just like it) a week after viewing. 1.5/4.
