The Girl

If there is any truth to this story about the relationship between Hitchock and Tippi Hedren during making of The Birds and Marnie, than Hitchcock wasn't just a little off-beat, but a downright inhuman psycho. This is very much an actor's movie, with Toby Jones delivering an incredible performance as the famous iconic director. Sienna Miller, who never seems to disappear into her roles, ultimately gives a solid performance and improves as the film goes on. The film itself, however, lacks much depth and forward momentum. Compulsively watchable only in fits and starts, only to unravel and fall into the deep end of silly melodrama and clumsy dialogue. There is a more compelling story to be told here, but as it stands The Girl is a mediocre disappointment. Still, Toby Jones is just great, and if this had not been a film on HBO, would be a top runner for the Best Actor Oscar.
