Hommage to Quentin's childhood?

This film, together with part two, is Quentins' hommage to the manga films he watched as child. The story, and particularly the cinematographic beauty of it, demand the eye of movie connaiseurs. All of the references, the similarities and the inspiration can be much better appreciated by people who have a bit of knowledge of old Manga films. The movie can be appreciated on it's own as well of course, but the excessive bloodspraying whe limbs get cut off, the sudden cut to manga and back and the dogged search for revenge may take some getting used to. All in all, it has a filmic beauty and a stroke of genius that could have only come from Quentin!
