'Kick-Ass 2' Kicks Less Ass

'Kick-Ass 2' is an underwhelming sequel. When compared to the first, it's not up to par in all areas. The best reason I can find for the inconsistency is the fact that there is a new writer/director at the helm, Jeff Wadlow. The story is a true continuation, with the characters and comic-book style presented in the same fashion as the previous, but Wadlow doesn't carry over those qualities that made 'Kick-Ass' more substantial and completely enjoyable. That perfect balance of reality, fantasy, bloody violence, crudeness, humor, and heart is gone here. Instead, Wadlow emphasizes the crudeness and the violence by taking away the reality entirely and adding in many unneeded gross gags. There's also no consequence to the violence this time. Mintz-Plasse's villain 'The Motherfucker' earns a couple of cheap laughs, but he is made out to be too much of goof and lacks any menace. Jim Carrey is the saving grace. It's such a shame that he is barely in it. The plot is decent enough to carry the film. The main heroes have a solid arc. Everything else is a complete disappointment. The unpleasant nature of many scenes just sucks out the potential fun.
